There is a reason I've been a proponent of on-line dating since my former roommate got me hooked on MySpace back in, ohhh, 2006. Even though MySpace wasn't designed as a dating tool, it soon took that direction. Shoot, I think my first on-line boyfriend found the girlfriend he cheating on me with on MySpace too. We all know now, MySpace has a dirty reputation for something aligned with AdultFriendFinder, so you can imagine how long it took me to abandon said social tool and transition to the more prestigious Facebook world, where bootycall attempts were less frequent.
The reason I've been inclined to utilize on-line dating sites is because of convenience, browse factor, elimination factor, criteria assessor, pass-the-time factor. Also, it's likely that I can easily find a new potential date outside of my existing social circles and networks. For some reason, and one that I can't easily identify, I'm reluctant to let my social circles meld. This includes friends and family and work relationships. I like to keep it all separate, I don't like the all-in-the-family mentality. Perhaps I like a clean break, if one is necessary.
Because I've taken such deliberate steps to keep those social circles from colliding, and because I tend to keep a relatively low profile on the people I've encountered in my life (especially those who haven't made it past date #1), it's only because it's me that my worlds collide, although, fortunately, without a big keer-pow, that usually follows my sad and pathetic luck. Sitting next to a new friend, she tells a story about meeting a young man, my "flavor" (the chocolate kind, although to clarify I'm all about everything but the white chocolate). She goes on to say that he's very nice, professional, sharp dresser, great car, a little shorter than she, but they just didn't have much in common. She mentioned that he approached her in a parking lot, and he was a gentlemen and so she decided to give it a try. I listened intently, although not interested in meeting this person myself, as I'm in the middle of a complicated situation with the ex, but in my head, I wondered, if just by chance, could it be the one person in the world that I know that fits his description and would most definitely confidently approach a woman in the parking garage. So I ask, what does he do, and she confirms my suspicions. It's him. It's the one that I met years ago, who was purely kind and sweet, completely confident, we had good compatibility, but he didn't listen to me when I said that I wasn't "all about it" when he wanted his way. He was so insistent that I eventually found a boyfriend who wasn't interested in putting the cart before the horse. Years later, he still keeps in touch, I've seen him from time to time. Still a gentlemen. I'd consider us friends. But no thank you.
Fortunately, this one has no ill will towards me, doesn't even realize our social circles intersected. I'm not going to tell him so either. Probably six months from now, I'll hear from him again, wondering if I could help him find a bike to ride. Ask if I want to have dinner. Only in my world, does a friend recommend a date whose already been in and out of my circle.
